Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Arizona

The State of Arizona, like all other States in the U.S. requires every person who wishes to get an employment as an armed security guard, to apply for a license. The license will be proof that the applicant is qualified for the job as issued by the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Compared to unarmed security guards, armed guards are required to undergo special and intensive training involving the proper use of firearms. However, there are certain requirements that are common to both positions. Here is the list of the basic requirements needed for an armed guard license application.

  •  The applicant should be at least 21 years of age or older.
  •  He or she should be a U.S. citizen, or if a resident alien, should provide legal documents and working permits.
  •  There should be no record or track of felony convictions and acts of crime involving domestic violence and other misdemeanors.
  •  The applicant should be able to provide a high school diploma or any equivalency certification.
  •  He or she should have an honorable dismissal from the Armed Forces.
  •  A background check will be performed with full cooperation and submission required from the applicants.
  •  The applicant should be able to submit his or her fingerprints.
  •  Any training for an armed security guard should be done in a State accredited facility and should also take place within the State.

Application Information

A written form is required along with other supporting documents. The Arizona Department of Public Safety will evaluate the application to make sure that the candidates are fit for the position. This form applies to both security guards and private investigators in getting or renewing licenses.

The first part of the form covers all information of the current employer, for those applicants who wants to renew their existing licenses. The second part includes basic information such as social security number, full name, date and place of birth, age, sex, phone or mobile number, home and e-mail address and other physical attributes. Applicants should also indicate whether he or she is prohibited by the state or the federal law from possessing this type of license.

If there is any experience in Military service, the applicant should also attach a copy of DD214. Candidates should also be aware that there is a non-refundable $124 application fee for armed guards.

Security Guard Training Course

All applicants are required to accomplish eight hours of security guard training followed by another sixteen hours of weapons training before being able to obtain a license.

Training covers the following:

  •  Ethical and legal issues
  •  Limited use of force allowed by the State
  •  Options other than lethal-force
  •  Firearm handling, maintenance and safety
  •  Laws of firearms in the State of Arizona

Armed guards are usually employed in many areas of the security sector such as hotels, private institutions, buildings and other facilities.
