Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Connecticut

Looking for a job could be a hard task sometimes but if you have the desire to serve and protect, then the state of Connecticut offers any person a position to work as an armed licensed security guard. But before getting that license, there are a few things you need to have in order to get the job. Requirements must be met before you are issued a state license. Both training and personal requirements must be met by the applicant.

As found in the Connecticut Department of Public Safety Division of State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit under Chapter 34 section 29 to 161, regulations and requirements must be completed by any person who desires to work as an armed security guard. The state of Connecticut will give the license issued once the requirements are completed.

The following are the requirements needed to complete:

  2. Applicant must be a United States citizen.
  3. Applicant must have a high school graduate, highs school diploma or an equivalency certificate.
  4. Applicant will be finger printed.
  5. Applicant must have his background checked via FBI style.
  6. Applicant should complete the number of hours needed for certified training.
  7. Applicant should pass the written exam satisfactorily.

As mentioned, applicants must undergo an 8 hour security guard training course. The training for the licensed armed security guard should be completed. Only a state approved facility that include the course material specified by the Commissioner of Public Safety is allowed to give such training.  This training will help the armed security guard to work with confidence within the security sector. It is also a way in which armed security guards are trained to be competent when it comes to emergencies and the parameters of the law.

The following are the outlined training courses:

  • An introduction to security
  • Basic first aid as well as recognizing emergency situations and prioritizing care.
  • Basic criminal justice including the Constitution, statutes, case law and regulations.

After completing all requirements needed and license is granted this is then valid for two (2) years. The license must be renewed before the expiration date. A refresher course is also required to be taken yearly for you to keep your license updated.
