Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in District of Columbia


 

Every state has a different requirement if you want to work as an armed security guard. District of Columbia also has their set of requirements for this kind of job. You will need various training and other forms of documentation in order to obtain your license and permit to carry a firearm. 

The following are requirements for applicants who are interested in applying as an armed security guard:

  • Applicant must be at least 21 years old. 
  • Must be a resident of District of Columbia or a legal alien of the United States 
  • Applicant must have a certification to carry an armed security license. 
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or identification card. 
  • Applicant must have a valid social security number to be submitted with the application. 
  • Background check must be done FBI style. 
  • Must have no criminal conviction in the last 5 years within application date. 
  • Must be of good moral character. 
  • Applicant must have no crime involving firearms or any serious misdemeanor. 
  • Must submit finger prints. 
  • Applicants must undergo training course. 

As part of the security guard training, armed security guards must complete the required hours in the classroom session as well as firing range qualification and training. They must meet the qualification requirements and demonstrate skills for an instructor. If they already have a certification for firearms, they must undergo re-certification to renew the armed security guard license.

The armed security guard must be trained and certified in order to prepare them for the work ahead.  They must have the skills needed in certain situations as well as the ability to carry a firearm.

The training courses for the armed security guard are the following:

  • Detainment of suspects 
  • The limit to use force 
  • The legal and ethical issues that can be encountered on the job 
  • Firearms training 
  • Working with professional authorities 
  • The limited types of arrests that armed security guard is able to perform 
  • Preparedness in emergency situations and CPR 
  • Written reports and documentations 

Other than that, there are also other training options that might be added. There are classes online for training options although some companies might require applicants their own class as well as courses that need to be taken. After all requirements are met, license is issued to an armed security guard.

The opportunities to work in different locations and people are endless for someone who is a licensed armed security guard. Armed security guards patrol areas where suspicious individuals and possible threats may occur but the presence of any armed security officer is enough to deter any crime or other illegal activities. Though it is inevitable to encounter danger while on duty, it is part of the armed security officer’s job. Having a license to carry firearms can help them to be in a position where they can prevent such situation to happen.
