Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Georgia

Home to 250 tree species, Georgia is a beautiful state where job opportunities are waiting for anyone who is interested in becoming an armed security guard. If you are flexible with your time and willing to be trained, then this is an opportunity to grab.

Like other states, Georgia also has a set of requirements needed to be accomplished in order for you to qualify for an armed security guard license.

For an individual who wishes to become an armed security officer in the state of Georgia, he/she must be:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must have a high school diploma or must have taken any equivalency examination
  • Must not be convicted of any felony or any crime involving weapons
  • Must have a valid driver’s license
  • Must not be convicted with acts of fraud
  • Must be a legal citizen or a resident alien of the United States
  • Must be in good physical condition

In Georgia, the license for the security guard is separated from the firearms license. The Security Guard Act of 1992 indicates the security guard guidelines covered as well as the amendments that have been attached. Although this is an open job for any applicant interested, this job appeals most to any person that has gotten out of the military.

Other than that, these are the qualifications needed by the applicant to comply:

  • Certified training completed
  • A thorough criminal background check
  • Submitted finger prints
  • Has a valid identification card or photo to be submitted

For training, the state of Georgia requires their applicants to be trained under a state recognized training center that will provide them the education needed for this job. This is needed for the armed security guard to perform well while on duty. Firearms training will also be included in this course.

Here are some of the classes that an armed security guard applicant needs to take while on training:

  • Firearms training
  • Detaining suspects
  • Crowd management
  • The legal issues that can arise during employment
  • Written reports
  • Ethical issues

Take not that the person with a firearms license should comply to a training course every year as required by the state laws. This will be needed in order for them to renew their license to carry any weapon. Once they have received their license, this is valid for two (2) years from the date of the issue.

Besides the training, a basic security guard training course of at least 24 hours class instruction must also be completed. The class curriculum may include the following:

  • Legal aspects
  • Patrol and observation
  • Role of Private security
  • Incident response
  • First Aid overview
  • Security resources: Surveillance operation and documentation
  • Customer service issues: working with and addressing the public

This class is designed to educate applicants regarding the job they chose. With the risk involve in this kind of work, these classes will enable them to be on guard whenever situations arise. This will not only help them but they will also help protect the public as well as ensuring their safety.
