Armed Security
Guard Training Requirements in
Kansas
The state of Kansas requires that all
armed security guard applicants must be licensed. Before
license is issued, the applicant must first provide the
requirements needed for qualification. Regulation and
license acquisition is overseen by the State Attorney
General’s Office. Rules governing armed and unarmed
guards are covered in the Kansas Administrative
Regulations statutes, and licensing provisions are under
the legislative Act K.S.A. 75-7b.
Basic criteria for armed security guard
position include the following:
- Armed guard
applicants must be 21 years of age or
older.
- All
applicants must submit proof of high school education
such as diploma or other equivalent
certificate.
- He or she
must have the legal right to work in the United
States as a citizen or a resident
alien.
- He or she
should submit to a criminal background
check.
- Fingerprints
must be submitted to the department and the
FBI.
- Applicants
should be in good health both mental and
physical.
- Applicants
should not be associated with drug and alcohol
abuse.
- Felony
convictions, acts of crime and misdemeanors are
negative records that may impede
application.
- Applicants
must complete the required hours of training and pass
the security guard training
course.
Application
Information
A filled-out application form must be
submitted for evaluation purposes. This form must hold specific
information about the applicant to help the hiring company
determine whether he or she is qualified for the armed security
guard position.
This includes full name, age, physical
attributes, current address, marital status, contact
information and detail about the hiring company. If the
applicant has already acquired a security officer’s license
that was revoked or suspended prior to the current application,
the state may not issue a new license unless all previous
issues are settled.
Applicants must list all employments for the
past ten years. Included in the list is information about the
previous employer such as company name, address, date of
employment and date it ended. Previous residences for the past
ten years should also be listed. A history of service in the
Military is important information and must be complete with the
branch, date of service and type of
discharge.
A mandatory criminal background check will
show if there are any criminal convictions associated with the
applicant. However, the applicant must also provide a list of
criminal history in the application form. This includes traffic
citations, records of violations of the uniform code and other
misdemeanors.
Security Guard
Training Course
Armed security guards must complete the
required training in accordance to the legislative Act K.S.A.
7507b and the Kansas Administrative Regulations statutes. All
training should be done in a facility that has been certified
and approved by the state. For armed guard applicants,
employers might require additional requirements and further
background checks.

Security guard license is valid for a period
of two years and should be renewed a month before the
expiration date.
