Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Kentucky

Requirements and standards differ from every state in the U.S. In the state of Kentucky, criteria may depend upon the city or county where the applicants want to be hired. Applicants must contact the local City Clerk’s office for confirmation of details.

It is up to the hiring company or agency to set additional requirements beyond the basics, however, listed below are the most common criteria in every state that each applicant must meet to qualify.

  • Armed security guard applicants must be at least 21 years of age and older.
  • The applicant must submit a high school diploma or any proof such as documents and certificate of equivalency.
  • The applicant must not have any history of crime involvement, felony convictions and illegal use of firearms.
  • The applicant must be able to acquire a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Kentucky.
  • He or she must have good communication skills.
  • Applicants must be emotionally and mentally stable.
  • He or she must be in good physical condition.
  • He or she must secure a permit to carry weapons.
  • All applicants should be able to complete the required hours of training.

Application Information

Since the state of Kentucky doesn’t provide a security guard license, application information will be based upon what the employers and the hiring company needs. Most would require a written application form that can be directly obtained from their departments. This form contains specific information and will be subject for evaluation purposes. Application may vary from city to city so it is best to consult the city clerk’s office.

Although the state doesn’t govern license acquisition, applicants must still conform to the state’s laws and standards. This generally includes abiding the laws themselves and providing their utmost performance in doing their jobs. Security guards are given the responsibility of protecting the public, maintaining peace and promoting order in the society.

Applicants should also make sure that the hiring company is licensed by the state. This is to certify that they have the legal right to work as security guards. Background checks are also done along with drug testing. All candidates should be able to complete this procedure to be fully qualified. For armed security guards, employers may require further background investigation since it is a risky positron.

Security Guard Training Course

All applicants are required to complete an accredited training to be well effective in their positions as armed security guards. They should be equipped with knowledge about law enforcement and other legal matters. The security guard training course must cover the subjects listed below.

  • Laws on criminal justice
  • Response to emergencies
  • Professionalism and public dealings
  • Crowd control
  • Firearm’s safety
  • Target practice

Further training is required to guards who carry weapons. Applicants should be able to provide proof of weapons training, safety measures and qualification on the firing range.
