Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Maine

Security guard licensing is not necessarily required in the state of Maine. All applicants for armed security guard positions, however, must follow the criteria and standards of the company or agency that they wish to be a part of. This includes submission of documents, application form, completion of security guard training and securing a weapon permit.

The hiring company must be licensed by the state and be able to follow the implementation of the general standards that each applicant must meet.

  • For armed guards, applicants must be 21 years old and above.
  • He or she must be a United States citizen or a resident alien with a valid registration and working permit.
  • He or she must have no previous acts of crime or felony convictions that are punishable by 1 year imprisonment for the past 5 years.
  • The applicant must not be drug dependent or have a history of drug and alcohol abuse.
  • The applicant must pass the mandatory drug test.
  • The applicant must not be a fugitive or found with crimes involving acts of fraud.
  • He or she must complete background checks.
  • He or she must be in good physical condition and must be mentally and emotionally sound.
  • He or she must acquire a valid driver’s license issued by the state of Maine.

Application Information

All applicants must adhere to the standards of the hiring company, since license acquisition for security guards is not governed by the state. A filled-out application form is the most common requirement upon inquiry. This form will be evaluated to see if the applicant is qualified for the position.

  •        General Information

This includes full name, full current address information – including address for the previous five years, place and date of birth, height, weight, and eye color. The applicant should also affix a photograph of himself or herself, taken within 6 months prior his or her application.

  •        Criminal History

The applicant should provide a list of criminal records, if any. Background checks will show if the candidate was ever convicted of felony or if he or she was involved in any acts of crime which was not included in the list. Depending upon the charges and the verdict, this can become reason for denial of application.

Security Guard Training Course

Basic training is required for both armed and unarmed security guard applicants. This should prepare them in dealing with whatever circumstances they will be facing in their field of work.

Training course includes:

  • Training in the legal and ethical issues
  • Immediate response to emergencies
  • Trespass laws
  • Observation and patrol
  • Professionalism and public relations

For armed guards, firearms training and weapons permit are required, the applicant should complete safety training from a certified instructor and present proof upon application.
