Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Nevada

The state of Nevada is known for its legalized gambling and lenient marriage and divorces proceedings. This fact alone made them one of the best places for tourists to visit. With this being said, armed security officers are almost needed everywhere.

There is an 11hour (or more) education training course and firearms training in which the state of Nevada requires for an armed security guard. For licensing, the Nevada Private investigators Licensing Board oversees it. This training is given to prepare and educate the armed security officers for any kind of situation that might occur.

Although a state license is not required for an armed security officer, it does require an applicant a number of training hours specified by the state. An 11 hour classroom security guard training for firearms and 3 hours for the range training with weapons is required.

First you must meet the qualifications needed:

  • Applicants must be 21 years old at least.
  • He/she must be a high school graduate and have a diploma or equivalency certificate.
  • Must have a valid photo identification to submit.
  • Applicants must submit complete fingerprints
  • Information from the Internal Revenue Service must be provided to be submitted with your application.

Armed security officers are required to complete a course before they can work as a licensed armed security.

This training course includes:

  • 8 hours of classroom instruction
  • Written exam
  • 5 hours range training

This training course is conducted at a certified facility. It may be in vocational schools or colleges. This will prepare the armed security guard to work within the security industry giving them the confidence that they need in order to handle different situations that may arise.

The 11 hours classroom course may include the following:

  • Written reports
  • History of Private Security
  • Legal and ethical issues
  • Defusing situations
  • Detaining criminals
  • Defusing situations
  • Emergency response such as first aid and CPR
  • Firearm training including marksmanship and targets

  • Cleaning and care of duty weapons
  • Nevada Laws relating to firearms and deadly force
  • Types of Handguns
  • Concealment techniques
  • Ammunition selection
  • Situational awareness
  • Weapons retention techniques
  • Fundamentals of pistol marksmanship
  • Live Firearms qualification
  • Contact with Law Enforcement

All of this must be completed in order to obtain the certification needed to carry a firearm in the state of Nevada. This is also mandated in the Nevada Private Investigators Licensing Board. Take note that the required firearm training will include classroom education and range time of 8 hours and 3 hours of using weapons on the range.

An armed guard who is interested to work in casinos or night clubs must have a license obtained from the Sherriff’s office in compliance with the Nevada state law. After obtaining your firearms license, a 1 hour refresher course must be taken. This must be renewed every 6 months in order for it to be valid and stay current on their licensing qualification.
