Armed Security Guard Training Requirements in Washington

The state of Washington is a center of industry, transportation, business and many others. It also boasts beautiful parks and monuments, wildlife reserves and many other resources. Washington is also one of the most populated states in the US, with this being said, it is a great opportunity to work, serve and protect its people as an armed security officer.

Like other states, Washington has its own set of rules and qualifications in order to become an armed security officer. Applicants must apply and obtain a firearms license before they can obtain their armed guard license.

Take note that there may be other documents needed from the applicant.

The basic requirements are the following:

  • Applicants for an armed security guard must at least be 21 years old.
  • A resident of the United States and must have a proof of residency if a resident alien.
  • A valid driver’s license is also needed and must be registered in the state of Washington.
  • Must be free from any alcohol or drug dependence.
  • Must be physically and mentally healthy.
  • Must have no felony conviction in the past 10 years.
  • Must have good moral character.
  • Must be hired or have an offer of hire from a licensed company.
  • Applicants must have valid photo identification.
  • Must have a valid social security number.
  • Must have a certificate or permit in order to carry firearms.

Armed security officers must train in a certified facility that is approved by the state of Washington. Having firearm skills is the most important training an applicant must have. This is to prepare them to work in many areas of the security sector. They are expected to respond professionally in case any emergency or threat arises.

Training course will include:

  • Preparedness in emergency situations and CPR
  • Firearms training
  • Written reports
  • The legal and ethical issues that can arise on the job
  • The limit to use of force
  • Working with professional authorities
  • Detainment of suspects

Once the license is issued, this is valid for two years and must be renewed before the expiration date. The bearer of the license must complete four hours of refresher training every year in order for their license to be valid. This is also needed if the holder of the license wishes to continue his/her services as an armed security officer.

The refresher training will include:

  • Customer service training – 1 hour
  • Emergency response and post related training – 3 hours

Having an armed security guard license will open opportunities for work. Be sure that you have submitted, completed all documents and accomplished security guard training in order for you to be granted by such license.
