Armed Security Guard Training
Requirements in Wisconsin
In becoming an armed security officer, the state of Wisconsin
mandates that they should be registered first and must obtain a firearm permit. The Wisconsin Department of
Regulation and Licensing Office regulate the license of armed guards for all applicants. As part of the
guidelines, all applicants must adhere to the qualifications that the state of Wisconsin have for armed
security officers.
Take note that before an applicant obtains registration and
firearms permit, they must first meet the criteria in order to qualify as an armed security guard such
as:
- Applicant must be at least 21 years
old.
- Applicant must be a United States
citizen.
- Applicant must have a proof of
residency.
- Applicant must be mentally competent
and is not suffering from other mental disorders.
- Applicant must have no history of
drug or alcohol abuse.
- Applicant must pass drug
test.
- Applicant must have no serious
felony convictions especially involving the use of firearms.
- Applicant must pass electronic
fingerprinting.
- Applicant must submit two forms of
photo identification.
- Applicant must have a signed release
of information for background check.
As other laws in the states, armed guards must go through security guard training and must be able to complete the number
of hours required.

- Report Writing
- Security Resources: Surveillance
operation and documentation
- Customer Service Issues: Working
with and addressing the public
- Patrol and Observation
- Incident Response
- Role of Private Security
- Legal
Aspects
In order to obtain a firearms permit, an applicant in the state of
Wisconsin must successfully completed the mandatory 36 hours of training. This is in accordance to the most
recent edition of Firearms-A Training Guide for Law Enforcement Officers. If the applicant completes this
course, he or she will be given the permit to carry firearms.
For permit renewal, applicants must complete a 6-hour refresher
training course which is also stated in the contents of this 36 hours course. An applicant who has not
obtained any official documentation of competence within 5 years upon the date of application for this permit
must also undergo the 36 hours training course in order for them to be given the firearms
permit.
For those applicant coming in from another state or province to
which preliminary permit is being provide in Wisconsin may take a 6 hour refresher course as long as they
adhere to the following conditions:
- Applicant was licensed by the other
government or jurisdiction allowing them to carry firearm while on duty as a security officer at any time
during the 5 years preceding application for a permit.
- Applicant must at least obtain a
minimum of 30 hours of firearms training while in the other jurisdiction.
