Armed Security
Guard Training Requirements in
Illinois
All
armed security guard applicants in the State of Illinois are
required to obtain a license. There are certain standards that
the applicants should meet to be fully qualified and required
hours of training to be completed. Every employment also
requires first, that an applicant applies for a PERC. This PERC
or Permanent Employment Registration Card is used and provided
upon application as proof that the applicant has already passed
through criminal background check and fingerprinting process.
Without this card, application for license or any employment
will be denied.
Like in all
other States in the U.S., the State of Illinois also has
their set of standards.
Here is the list of the most common
requirements for armed security guard
position.
- Applicants for
armed security guard must be 21 years of age or
older.
- Applicants
should present proof of high school education or any
equivalent documents.
- He or she must
be a U.S. citizen, or if a legal alien, should have a valid
working permit.
- He or she must
submit to a background check and send fingerprints to the
Federal Bureau of Investigation.
- Applicants must
acquire a valid social security
number.
Application
Information
Regulation and
issuance of PERC is overseen by the IDFPR or the Illinois
Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
Applicants for PERC must first match and provide the
standards mentioned above.
Fingerprinting
process is done at Live Scan centers. The applicant will
need to set an appointment and bring along a photo for
identification. This will be submitted electronically to
the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which will then be
used for investigation of criminal history. The
Department will issue a fingerprinting certificate after
completing the process.
Applicants
must also submit a written application form containing
general and other required information. This form can
either be directly obtained from the employer or
downloaded online from the IDFPR website. It will be sent
back, subject for evaluation along with a $55
non-refundable application fee, payable to the
IDFPR.
Security Guard Training
Course
Every armed
security guard applicants are required to complete 20
hours of basic training and an additional 20 hours for
firearms instruction. Some employments may require
further background checks as this position has higher
risks and liabilities compared to unarmed guards.
Training can be completed at all State certified
facilities.
It is very
important to undergo training as this will prepare them
and equip them with proper knowledge in handling all the
problems they will be dealt with on their job. Completing
the required hours of security guard training will ensure
the employer that the applicant is ready and
qualified.

proper use of force
- Detainment of
suspects
- Instructions on
how to deal with emergencies (fire and
medical)
- How to deal
with the general public
- Crowd
control
Firearms
training for armed guards include:
- Target
practice
- Marksmanship
License issued
by the Department is only valid for two years. To keep it
updated, security guards must take yearly refresher
courses.
