Security Guard Training Requirements in Connecticut (Unarmed)


 

The state of Connecticut approves license for unarmed security guards under a few conditions and requirements. Chapter 534 Section 29 through 161 of the Connecticut state says that people who are applying for a security guard license must complete the following requirements. All these statutes and licensing falls under the Connecticut Department of Public Safety Division of State Police Special Licensing and Firearms Unit. Personal information, written exam and a required training are the requirements that must be completed. Once these requirements are completed, the Connecticut Department of Public Safety will issue the unarmed security guard their license along with the written application for the license.

The following are the requirements to be completed by the applicant:

  1. Applicant must be a high school graduate. A high school diploma or equivalency certification is needed. 
  2. Applicant must be at least 18 years old to obtain the unarmed security guard license. 
  3. Applicant must have a valid Connecticut driver’s license. 
  4. Applicant must provide fingerprints. 
  5. Applicant must have a proof of legal ability to work in the United States. 
  6. Applicant’s background will be checked done by FBI style. 
  7. Applicant should pass a written training exam with at least a 70 percent grade. 
  8. Applicant should not have any felony charges or convictions in their criminal history or serious misdemeanors. 
  9. Applicant must be of good moral character. 

In order for the applicant to have his unarmed security guard license, applicant is required to attend and train under a state certified facility. The 8 hour training course that is approved by the Commissioner of Public Safety to prepare the applicant for employment. This training is designed by the Commissioner of Public Safety to prepare unarmed security guards to work competently and efficiently in the security sector. By having this security guard training, the applicant is enabled to handle and prepare for emergencies, criminal activity and other employment related duties.

The course includes the following:

  • An introduction to security 
  • Basic first aid that will include identifying emergency and how to prioritize care 
  • Basic criminal justice that includes case law, statutes, regulations and the Constitution 
  • Search and seizure that will include the Fourth Amendment and relevant statutes 
  • Public safety 
  • Use of force and the Connecticut laws 
  • Terrorism, threat response and hazardous emergencies 
  • A written exam that must be passed with at least a 70 percent grade 

Once the applicant has completed all the requirements and passed the training and exams, he can now work for both private and public settings. The license issued is valid for two (2) years and the state requires the licensed security guard to take a refresher course yearly as long as it is kept valid.

Unarmed security guards can work in government facilities and federal buildings, schools and colleges, malls, museums, parks, residential establishments and others. They can also work in private companies and other privately owned establishments as long as their license is valid.
