Security Guard Training Requirements in Florida (Unarmed)

The sunny state of Florida is a nice place to live and work. With its fine weather and beautiful beaches, Florida is a great place to start your career. If you are looking for a good job that is not only exciting but also challenging, then being an unarmed security officer will surely suit you.

When obtaining a security guard license in Florida, there are two kinds of license approved. They are the Class D and Class G licenses however, for an unarmed security officer only the Class D license is needed. Like all states, Florida has different requirements to acquire a security guard license. Applicants can process their application normally or apply online but take note that additional fees may be charged towards the applicant. Class D license requires the applicant to have forty (40) hours of classes in security guard training and must be from a certified facility.

This training includes:

  • Basic first aid training
  • Written reports
  • Legal liabilities and other issues
  • Observations skills
  • Emergency procedures
  • Fire containment
  • Crime and accident prevention
  • Other required class training

For normal processing, applicants will have to complete the following qualifications needed before they can obtain their Class D requirements.

Under the Florida State Statutes section 493, these are as follows:

  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old
  • Must provide full sets of finger prints
  • Must be a legal resident of the United States
  • Must have no disqualifying criminal record
  • Must have a signed waiver to allow the department to conduct any background check

When all qualifications are met, Class D license can be then applied. Applicants will be required to have their fingerprints taken, notarization of the license application and a security guard photo ID. While the license is in process, a temporary card will be issued to the applicant. This will allow them to be temporary employed while waiting for their permanent license. The release of the Class D license will be between 60-90 days.

When you are submitting your application, take note of the important documents you need to pass in order for your license to be approved:

  • A valid social security number must be provided
  • The name and address of the school or training facility where you took your training course
  • The valid address where the training has taken place
  • Copies of the training curriculum
  • Copies of the final examination
  • The school and instructors must use approved criteria for training the unarmed security guard license

After everything else is completed, the state of Florida will issue your permanent unarmed security guard license. Make sure you have followed all the requirements and training needed in order to get the approval of your Class D license as soon as possible.
