Security Guard Training Requirements in Michigan (Unarmed)


 

Michigan is one of the eight most populated states in the United State. Home to vast lakes and areas of water, Michigan has been one of the best places to live in. If you are a resident of this state and is interested to work for security, the State of Michigan requires applicants a few qualification needed.  

In Michigan, unarmed security officers are not required to have a license. However, the company that you are under or will hire you must be certified and licensed that is approved by the State.

Here are the requirements needed for unarmed security guard:

  • Must be a United States citizen or a registered resident alien
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must have a high school diploma or any equivalent such as GED
  • Must be submitted to a background check and must pass it.
  • Must pass a drug test and screening. Take note that this is not required by the state of Michigan but by the hiring agency.
  • Must be in good physical condition.

There are also other requirements that might be helpful such as having good communication skills, has a valid driver’s license in the State of Michigan and can withstand long periods of standing. Training courses might also be added and a number of hours must be completed. If there are companies who require their own security guard training, then it is better.

A basic training may be given to applicants and may include the following:

  • Legal Aspects
  • Patrol and observation
  • Incident response
  • Role of Private Security
  • Emergency training and first aid
  • Security responses
  • Customer service issues

As an unarmed security officer your responsibility is to patrol, observe, protect and report. You have to understand that there are risks involved in becoming a security officer such as injury or death. Your main goal is to deter criminal activity on the premises you are working so make sure you are able to handle situations that may arise.

Employment for unarmed security officer is not hard to find. Almost all areas that need security are in need of guards. They can find work in malls, banks, hotels, schools, apartment complexes, hospitals, bars and many other facilities. Also, the chances of working in private properties and establishments are open for security officers with proper training. Even private employers are seeking security unarmed security guards these days to work as body guards.

So your option to work is endless just as long as you have received the proper training needed. With all the opportunities of employment, being a security officer has proven to be one of the most popular and well paying career option.
