Security Guard
Training Requirements in North Carolina
(Unarmed)
All unarmed security guard applicants
must be licensed when applying in the state of North
Carolina through the North Carolina Department of
Justice. This is the major requirement for an individual,
seeking for a security guard’s position, to be employed.
Registration or license acquisition requires certain
amounts of security guard training. It also
includes meeting the general criteria and the set of
standards in accordance to the Private Protective
Services North Carolina General Assembly law
74-C.
The following are some of the basic
requirements common in most
states.
- Applicants for
unarmed security guard position must be 18 years of
age or older.
- He or she must
be allowed to work in the United States as a citizen
or a registered
alien.
- He or she must
not have a history of felony convictions and criminal
activity such as illegal use and possession of
firearms.
- Applicants must
have a good moral
character.
- Applicants must
not be associated in any acts of crime involving
illegal possession, sale and distribution of drugs,
narcotics and other controlled
substance.
- Applicants must
not be drug or alcohol
dependent.
- He or she must
be in good physical condition and able to stand for
long hours.
- He or she must
possess a valid driver’s
license.
- Applicants must
have no prior revocation of
license.
Application
Information
For criminal background investigation to be
completed, applicants must be able to submit 2 sets of
fingerprints to the department. A certified copy of the applicant’s criminal
background history for the last 4 years must be attached to his
or her application including two 1x1 passport type photo, taken
recently. The applicant must also make sure that he or she is
employed under a licensed private security company or is under
the supervision of a licensed patrol
officer.

also be provided.

Security Guard Training
Course
For a security guard to be fully effective on
the job, he or she must first undergo specific training
programs as required by the state.
These shall cover 16 hours of classroom
instruction involving the topics listed
below.
- North Carolina

- Ethical and
legal issues (3 hrs)
- Dealing with
emergencies (3 hrs)
- Communications
(2
hrs)
- Patrol and
observation (3 hrs)
- Written reports
(3 hrs)
- Deportment (1
hr)
In addition to this, unarmed security guards
must be able to complete 12 hours of additional training that
should be completed within 30 days upon employment. The license
is only valid for 1 year, after which, the security guard must
renew his or her license to keep it current and validated.
Employments are available in a lot of areas of the security
sector such as schools, parks and other public offices and
buildings.
