Security Guard Training Requirements in Oregon (Unarmed)


 

The state of Oregon is home to some of the most populated cities in the United States. With a 12% increase in population since the year 2000, Oregon is the 23rd largest in the US in terms of metro area. With this statistic reports, it is no doubt that Oregon is doing all to protect the safety of its people. And by protecting, the state of Oregon is open for individuals who are interested to work as an unarmed security officer. 

In the state of Oregon, unarmed security guards are required to have a license. As required by the state, applicants must obtain a license before they are allowed to work as an unarmed security officer. First, they must meet the basic qualifications in order to become a potential candidate as an unarmed guard. 

The following are the basic requirements needed: 

  • Must be at least 18 years old.  
  • Must have a high school diploma or any equivalent such as GED.  
  • Must be a United States citizen or a registered resident alien and must have a proof of his/her citizenship.  
  • Must have a driver’s license in the state of Oregon.  
  • Must be submitted to a background check and must pass it.  
  • Must submit a fingerprint affidavit and at least one fingerprint card.  
  • Must have good communication skills.  
  • Must be of good moral character.  
  • Must have no felony convictions such murder, rape or aggravated assault. Applicants with such criminal history will not be granted license.  
  • Must be in good physical condition.  
  • Must have no drug or alcohol dependence.  
  • Must not suffer from any psychological disorder that could hinder his performance as a security guard.  
  • Must have a temporary work permit.  
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time.  

Unarmed security guards in the state of Oregon are required to complete a security guard training program approved by the Board of Public Safety Standards and Training. Applicants must complete the 8 hour classroom instruction course. An assessment exam of at least 4 hours is given by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training instructor. Candidates must also undergo 12 hours of training prior to certification and must be signed by a certified trainer. They are expected to pass the written exam and must have at least 80 percent score in order to become a possible candidate as an unarmed security officer. Tests cover all the materials included in the training. 

Take note that, applicants who have minor convictions might be given a certification provided that they were not incarcerated for the crimes within the last 10 years. Also, all training fees may vary depending on the instructor as well as the courses given. All fees are none refundable. 

Unarmed security guard license is valid for 2 years and must be renewed yearly. License holders are required to take a refresher course in order for their license to continue its validity.
