Security Guard
Training Requirements in Texas
(Unarmed)
To become an unarmed
security officer in the state of Texas, applicants must follow
the guidelines of the Non-Commissioned Security Officer section
1702 in order for them to obtain a Texas license. The law of
Texas mandates all security officers to complete 30 hours of
training at a certified
facility.
In order to have the
license, applicants must adhere to the following
qualifications:
- Applicant must
be at least 18 years old.
- Must have a
high school diploma to present or any
equivalent.
- Must submit for
a background check FBI
style.
- Applicant must
provide proof that he/she is allowed to work legally
in the United States and must supply tax information
to the Internal Revenue
Service.
- Applicants who
have a DWI for the first time will not be
disqualified from holding an unarmed security guard
license. Even though this is a Class B misdemeanor,
first timers are exempted and can be allowed to have
an unarmed security guard
license.
- An applicant
that has been convicted of Class B misdemeanor cannot
hold a security license in the state of Texas with
some exceptions for a five year
period.
- Applicants who
have been convicted of Class A or felony misdemeanor
are not allowed to hold a license for 20 years after
the conviction.
- Unarmed
security officers are required to wear their uniform
at all times indicating the company they are employed
to.
Unarmed
security officers must take classes by a certified
facility as outlined in section 1702.
This class
will teach and train applicants:
- Leadership
skills
- Training in
non-violent disagreement
resolution
- Safety
training
- Use of
force
Education of the Texas Private Security
Bureau chapter 1702 of the Texas occupation code is also
included.
This is the code that regulates the
security field in which applicants with be trained
to:
- Write
reports
- Respond to
emergencies
- Legal
issues
A required
written examination by the state of Texas is given once
the security
guard training course is completed. Applicants
must pass the written exam in order to obtain their
license. Individual licensing can only be accepted once
he/she is successfully hired by a security company. A
permanent license with be received in 4 to 6 weeks from
the date of receiving the application. This license is
valid for two years from the date it was issued and must
be renewed if the holder wishes to continue his/her work
in the security industry.
An unarmed
security officer can be employed in various places.
Though unarmed security officers are not allowed to carry
firearms, non-lethal devices may be issued to them. They
responsible for handling shoplifters, respond to
emergency situations such as fires as well as medical
emergencies. Unarmed security officers are trained so as
not to impose alarm to other people in case such
situation does happen.
