Security Guard Training Requirements in Virginia (Unarmed)

One of the best career options these days is being a licensed security officer. The state of Virginia welcomes applicants for unarmed security officers with the condition of passing all requirements that the state requires. Like most states in the US, Virginia has their own set of qualifications for unarmed security guards that must be completed by an applicant.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old if he or she is interested to apply. This is outlined in the regulations found in Title 9.1-138 up to 9.1-150 in the Private Security Services Code of Virginia. This code states the guidelines needed by the applicant in order to be approved for a license. The applicant’s age, fingerprints and background check are among the requirement that needs to be gathered.

In this code, the functions of an unarmed security guard are also given such as:

  • Detection
  • Perform observation
  • Reporting to the appropriate authorities
  • Not carrying any firearm

An 18 hour course must be completed as a prerequisite in acquiring a license.

Applicants must complete the following:

  • Applicants must also train under a certified instructor as approved by the state of Virginia.
  • All applicants must also have a background check as part of their requirements.
  • They must submit fingerprint cards as required.
  • They must also be a high school graduate and must present a diploma or any equivalent.
  • Applicants must also provide a proof that they are authorized to work in the United States and must provide information for the Internal Revenue.
  • They must also have a valid driver’s license in the state of Virginia.

As mentioned, training will be given to those applicants who are interested in applying as an unarmed security guard. Their security guard training must be done in order to obtain their license provided that they must train in a board-approved facility.

Training will include the following:

  • Crisis deterrence
  • Legal issues
  • Report writing
  • First aid and CPR certification
  • Public crowd control
  • Emergency fire control
  • Property rights
  • Detention of criminals
  • Operate alarm systems

Applicants must apply for a permanent certification card within 90 days once they are hired by a security company. This permanent license will be valid for two years and must be renewed before the expiration date in order for the bearer of the license to continue his or her services in the security sector.

Once every requirement is done, the unarmed security officer is now ready to be employed. Training is needed in order for them to function and respond skillfully in case emergencies arise. Not only that, they are also trained to keep the public in order in case any threat is detected. So if you are interested in becoming an unarmed security officer, the state of Virginia is a great place to start your career as a security officer.
